Did quite a lot of stuff today, but took a long time to actually complete each task. Talking about school work, of course. So anyway, I was watching some Cobra videos today (of course, what else do I do in my free time right?) and kind of realised why I like them so much.

They don’t take themselves seriously. There is NO message in their music, according to them. But their songs are not brainless, if you actually look at their lyrics. They’re so not serious that its refreshing. Every band takes their music seriously, or try to convey messages in their songs. But they just don’t. Which is quite a bizarre concept to understand.

I would expect seasoned (often old) artistes to take their music seriously. They probably know all about the industry already, they know their stuff, know their instruments, and are good at their craft. The pressure is tremendous to produce or write a good song. If they write a “bad” (I put inverted commas cos’ good and bad music is very subjective to individual opinion) song, they get slammed for it. Write a “good” song that hits the charts, they still get haters calling them sellouts and mainstream. So most artistes take their songs seriously. Like I would expect Bruce Springsteen or perhaps Paul Mccartney to know their stuff, and take their songs seriously. Sometimes the whole music process becomes so serious that its no longer enjoyable. Music is no longer a joy to the artist, but a burden. I think this happens to everyone sometimes, not just in making music, but just doing something we love (e.g. writing poems, stories?). And sometimes, records make the artist look like he/she’s trying too hard to generate a hit. I think everything just spirals downward from there.

So, it doesn’t mean songs have to be meaningless. It just has to be enjoyable for the artist to play them. Or just have fun making the record. Which may result in songs like “Prostitution Is The World’s Oldest Profession (And I, Dear Madame, Am A Professional)”. LOL.

I’m rather sleepy. Yes, I know its 8.23pm. Gonna do some Hist readings on Korean War and read King Lear then I’m gonna hit the hay. Think I’ll just go to school around 12 or 1 tomorrow and miss Bio and Geog (what Geog?) and go for Hist since we’re learning Korean War and its a 1h40min lesson. How I wish there was no Hist so I can just not go. Still have to hand in my EE after school too. Argh.

I really like this year’s NDP song btw. LOL. But yeah, its Electrico, so its not really embarrassing to like it luh.
